Climate+ is the action of going beyond net zero. It means doing more than just offsetting your carbon footprint - by creating an environmental benefit by removing additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
We know that one of the most sustainable and cost-effective ways to accomplish this is by planting trees. Climate+ is a community of tree planters, rehabilitating our Earth, and having fun while we’re at it.
How can we do better?
There’s no such thing as a perfect environmentalist, don’t be discouraged by your ability to make meaningful changes. Big change can start as as small as:
- Turning your thermostat down by 2 degrees.
- Wearing clothes more than once before washing them.
- Bike, walk or ride the bus to work!
- Switch over to LED bulbs and smart appliances.
- Try buying local, seasonal fruits and vegetables.
- Use waxed cloth instead of plastic wrap for food.
- Remember your reusable bags, mugs and cutlery for all outings.
The impact of trees
Did you know that trees combat climate change? We have tonnes (literally) of excess carbon dioxide in our air. Trees do something called ‘sequestering carbon’, it’s their way of cleaning our air, and eliminating harmful elements from the earth. They do that by absorbing the C02, and storing the carbon. Not only do trees sequester carbon, they also produce oxygen. Next time you’re outside, take a nice deep breath of fresh air, and thank the nearest tree.
As we work to fight global warming, we can also thank the trees for cooling our earth. They provide shade, and their leaves release water vapor, cooling the planet even more. Just ten trees can offset the impact of a weekend road trip, a lifetime of iphones or even your drunken 2am hamburger habit.
Tree planting has a meaningful impact that reaches far beyond carbon sequestration. They provide homes for wildlife, and in areas like Madagascar, the crab and fish populations provide additional food sources and income for the locals. In addition to the environmental benefits, we employ people from local communities. This extends our impact far beyond environmentalism. These are the building blocks of a long lasting and sustainable restoration project.
We recognize that there are lots of ways to offset carbon, but are confident that our tree planting initiatives provide the most meaningful, holistic and verified impact on our Earth.
What does offsetting mean to tentree?
To tentree, neutrality isn’t change, so ‘offsetting’ means going beyond neutral and doing something positive for our planet. We don’t agree with the idea that simply doing no harm will equate to change, we’re here on this beautiful earth, ready to do some good.
We want to make offsetting easy, understandable, accessible, fun, and impactful. Our climate+ packages aim to do just that.
Where do we plant your trees?
Our Earth Day Climate+ packages will allow us to work with our partners to plant many species of trees including mangroves in the coastal regions of Madagascar and Indonesia. Mangrove trees are one of the most efficient carbon sequestering trees in the world and planting them provides much more than a carbon impact for our planet. We are incredibly grateful for our planting partners, like Eden Reforestation Projects who are on the ground making things happen.

The average plane emits 115 grams of carbon per kilometer. We use the conversion factor 0.000001 to get from grams to metric tons and we get 0.000115 MT of CO2 per kilometer of air travel. 115grams x 0.000001 = 0.000115 MT Carbon An extreme example of influencer travel would be 400,000 miles per year. Let’s use 200,000 kilometres of travel as an example. If we multiply that number by 1.609 we get the number in kilometres . 200,000miles x 1.609 = 321,800 km In order to get the total of metric tons we multiply kilometres traveled by 0.000115 MT CO2, which equals 37 MT CO2 over a year. 321,800 km x 0.000115 MT CO2 = 37.007 MT CO2
Hotels emit about 31kg of CO2 per room per night. Assuming an influencer stays at a hotel for 200 nights per year, and each night emits 31kg CO2, the total annual emissions would equal 6,200kg CO2. 31kg x 200 nights = 6,200 kg CO2 per year We use the conversion factor 0.001 to get from kg of CO2 to MT CO2 and get a total of 6.2 MT CO2. 6,200kg CO2 x 0.001 = 6.2 MT CO2
We know the average plane emits 115grams of carbon per kilometer. We use the conversion factor 0.000001 to get from grams to metric tons and we get 0.000115 MT of CO2 per kilometer of air travel. 115grams x 0.000001 = 0.000115 MT Carbon In order to calculate the total amount of MT of CO2 per shipment, we will multiply the shipment distances by 0.00015 MT CO2 per kilometer of travel. We are going to assume influencers receive packages about once per week and that these packages are delivered within 500 kilometres. There are 52 weeks per year, meaning total shipping distance would equal 26,000 kilometres annually. 52 weeks x 500 km = 26,000 kilometres annually As outlined above, the average plane emits 0.000115 MT CO2 per kilometer traveled. In order to get the total shipment emissions, we multiply kilometres flown by the 0.000115 MT CO2 per kilometer and get 2.99 MT CO2. 26,000km x 0.000115 MT CO2 = 2.99 MT CO2
Instagram emits 5.06g CO2 per post. The average influencer will post about 20 times per month so about 240 times per year. If we multiple the emissions per post by the posts per year we get the total emissions from posts. 20 times per month x 12 months = 240 per year 5.06g CO2 x 240 posts = 1,214.4 grams of CO2 In order to get grams in metric tons we use the conversion factor 0.000001 and get 0,001214.4 MT CO2. 1,214.4g CO2 x 0.0000001 = 0.0012144 MT CO2
Time on Phone
If a person uses their phone for one hour per day over a year they would emit 1.4 tons of CO2, the average influencer uses their phone for 9 hours per day. If we multiply 1.4 tons for one hour of usage by 9 hours of usage we get a total of 12.6 MT CO2 per year 1.4 MT CO2 x 9 hours per day = 12.6MT CO2
In total if we add all the emissions together we get 58.7982 MT CO2 37.007 MT + 0.0012144 MT + 2.99 MT + 12.6 MT + 6.2 MT = 58.7982 MT CO2
